City could track paid sick leave under proposed bill

Councilman Ruben Wills introduced a bill to track the city’s effort to require paid sick leave.

Councilman Ruben Wills — who expressed fears about the expanded paid sick leave mandate’s effects on small businesses but voted for it anyway — introduced a bill to require the city to track those effects.

Under the bill introduced Wednesday by the Queens Democrat, the Independent Budget Office would have to prepare annual reports tracking job numbers and wages at affected businesses and failure rates for small businesses.

The expanded bill, which takes effect next week, requires all businesses with five or more workers to offer at least five paid sick days a year.
